The Special Exhibition on Slovenia
Originally scheduled as a limited-run exhibition but now permanent, and unrelated to the other historical and chronological limits of the permanent collection, the Special Exhibition on the History and Culture of Slovenia honors Central Europe's rising star, the newly independent nation of Slovenia, and its people and culture.
Despite wars and oppression, the Slovenian people were united by a culture and language for over a thousand years until independence in 1991. The JHSH has condensed the beauty and complexity of this small but important country into a purpose-built special exhibition room.
Slovenia is a land of green hills and swift rivers, of beautiful countryside and superb architecture, of tiny towns and modern cities. The JHSH collection allows you to experience several hundred images and objects, music and folklore, art and technology, caves and castles, postage stamps and money (with no politicians on the paper currency), festivals and recreation, food and wine, books and buildings, and much more. There are heroes like Jože Plečnik, extraordinary architect, Dr. France Prešeren, attorney and national poet, and Janez.Valvasor, encyclopedist and cultural historian. See a Tarot deck made by a concentration camp prisoner, folk art in the form of painted end panels of beehives, and a stuffed dormouse. See how you can, on the same day, ski in the Julian Alps and swim in the Adriatic Sea.
Over 120 tourist brochures are available, as well as a complete library. The JHSH can plan your vacation to this wonderful nation. Whether it is museums, wineries, health spas, castles made into hotels, mountain climbing, or simply meeting delightful people, Slovenia will make you happy.
