SPECIAL TOURS

CHAMPAGNE TOUR.  At the end of the usual tour, each visitor gets to sit on the Gilded Age furniture in the regular JHSH collection and enjoy a glass of fine domestic sparkling wine (can't call it champagne unless it is from that district of France: that's the law) and then take home the JHSH logo glass. $20 per person.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Details will appear closer to the dates of specific events.

February

Slovenian Cultural Day, daytime, on a Saturday in most. but not all years. Folk music, food, and a program of speeches and demonstrations on a theme within Slovenian culture. Usually very lively, and regular tours resume in the afternoon.

August 20 2011

100th anniversary celebration of the JHSH being moved to its present location. There will almost certainly be a parade from the original site (574 Holly, 1884-1911) to the current site. What else would one do to begin? More details later.

October, second half

Exterior Halloween lights (very basic but festive) and more elaborate interior tableaux for what the Pagans call Samhain. Book a tour and see even more than usual.

November 19 Daytime

Usually on a weekend day closest to November 19, the President's actual birthday, typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tours focusing more fully on President James A. Garfield's accomplishments.  There will be birthday cake, snacks, and soft drinks in an approximation of how it was done in 1881.

December and early January

JHSH interior Christmas decoration is almost as extensive as it would have been in the 1880s. After temporarily storing some furniture, the Wooton parlor contains two floor-to-ceiling Christmas trees. The larger one has at least 635 antique and modern ornaments (there is always an exact yearly count!) with an emphasis on style and wit. The smaller tree, honoring Gilded Age capitalism, is adorned with foreign paper currency from past and present, with 202 nations, former nations, monetary authorities, and entities mistakenly believing themselves to be nations, all represented. Many celebrities appear on the money, including Copernicus, Colonel Qaddafii, and Jack Nicklaus, among a few dozen others.
